The cost of boat paint is going up, but it’s not just for German boat owners.
There’s a new German boat paint business that is starting up in the Canadian capital.
Boats from the country’s old fleet of German U boats are now being painted to look like new.
“The first boat that we did it on is a U-boat from the Second World War,” said John Reitze, who is leading the paint business at his workshop in Victoria.
“And it’s been painted on the front end.”
Reitze says that’s the last of the old boats.
The new paint job is designed to look much like a modern boat.
It comes in a variety of finishes.
Reitzze says it’s also a good opportunity for young artists to be able to do something different.
“It’s a really good opportunity because it’s the first time it’s happening,” he said.
Reichsbach is hoping to expand in the next few years.
“We’ve had a lot of interest in the U-boats.
And there are a lot more people out there who are interested in boats and paint,” said Reitzzes partner and co-owner of the paint company, Andreas Fuchs.
The paint business has also attracted a lot interest from foreign buyers.
“A lot of the foreign buyers want to buy the U boats,” said Fuchs, who added that there are now over 500 boats being painted in Germany.
“So they’re interested in the heritage and the authenticity of the boat,” he added.
The U-Boat is one of many new business ventures that are taking off in Canada.
